PERJURY

Every person who testifies under oath, whether to a court or a branch of the government, must tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth.  To be convicted of perjury, the government must prove that a person took an oath authorized by the law of the United States before a competent tribunal, officer, or person, and while under oath, knowingly made a false statement about material facts.  One can commit perjury by falsely testifying before a court, a grand jury, and even by persuading another witness to testify falsely and commit perjury.
